North Carolina Comic Con

Hey NC Comic Con! We’re in a cab on our way to the airport. Tommy Lee Edwards tells me you guys have the best “artist con” in the country. And you folks are the friendliest folks in the country. Well, I’m on my way to see you. And we are going to have the greatest time in the world. First we’re going to Ultimate Comics from 5 to 7 pm with prints and my right hand to sign your comic books. See ya there.

Monday, October 14, 2013

The portfolios are still missing, BUT,..The N.Y. Taxi and Limousine Service, using G.P. S. have tracked it down to 7 cabs, and tomorrow the drivers will be interviewed.

N,Y COMIC CON was GREAT. People spent properly and wisely and everyone sold wisely and cos-play was limited and fun, and the Actors were first class. Lots of Cars and displays. Ask anyone.
Every third person asked about the folios. SEND MONEY TO STEVE NILES, if you can.

Next stop,..Wizard World NASHVILLE!  Tennessee, we will SEE YOU beginning FRIDAY!

Montreal, here we come:   I'm finishing up commissions of Batman-catwoman, Ra's Al Ghul and Batwoman.  Then on to my Superman story.   My problem:   Shift toward the NEW Superman, or angle to the regular  "old" Superman but upgraded.  Oh, well.
Neal.
Will someone tell the person who has the 'Neal Adams Almanac' to remove my name from his backbiting and insulting masthead, and replace it with his own. IT is NOT "my" Almanac in any way shape or form! It is HIS.
A short response, perhaps a little known fact:  Most people talk with their mouths OPEN.  I have always drawn them so. When their mouths are closed, that, for "good" story-telling, means they are not talking!
Many comic book artists don't know this little factoid.  You may remind them.
Neal,
Any questions? I will be at the Montreal Comic Con beginning Fri and going through the weekend.

Commissions.

Best way to get commissions is to order them before a convention, and pick them up at the convention. They get that little extra time and attention to make them just that much better.

Doesn't that make sense?

We're going to be at the Baltimore Comic Con next weekend, The Montreal Comic Con the following weekend, and at the Wizard World Mid Ohio Convention the weekend after that.

Contact Jason, at spyda@spydacreations.com

Don't wait til the last minute.

I thought I would post up what people have ordered or commissioned that they will be picking up at the Chicago Con this weekend. Here is a nice Spirit piece that someone worked out with Jason. Still Some Room On the Chicago Comic Con Commission List

Check out this really cute commission that someone commissioned Neal to do for a show.
It is a CUTIE! We have some room left so if anyone out there would like to get a commission, now is the time to order it. Neal can finish it up in front of you at the show if you feel you want to be a part of your commission being done. You can work this all out by emailing spyda@spydacreations.com
Jason makes it very easy to place your order and discuss with you what you might like. If we have questions we will get in touch with you and show it along the way. Like the piece below we checked with the person who ordered it if they wanted a mask on the baby or not? He will be getting a little R
and a cape. We work very closely with you so you can get exactly what you want. Order now.

Fandomfest was Fantastic!!! Best Ever !!

The Big hit in Louisville seems to be the Superman Vs Muhammad Ali prints along with the 100 Greatest Athletes of the century.....Why?
(1) Because this is Louisville...Home of Ali and the Muhammad Ali museum,...and.....
(2) Because both prints have the exact same composition...Except in the first, Ali is boxing Superman
and in the second Ali boxing Michael Jordan...And watching the fight is the other 98 "Famous athletes of the Century".

Also...These matching prints are sold not only at the regular print size but also at the deluxe at 13x19 at $30.00 each and the giclee at 16x22 at $100.00 each (These are really classy.)http://www.nealadamsstore.com/search.asp?keyword=champions&search=GO
All are suitable for framing and all have the legend showing everyone in the audience.

BIG HIT!

a "S" or does it start with a "R"?   Oops forgot the Thor Hercules cover.......

Saturday at San Diego Comic Con

I am at Booth 1829.
I will be doing a panel "Quick Draw" with the Great Sergio Aragones and the master himself Scott Shaw.  I know this is one of the highlights of the show every year at Comic Con. So come and support me today since I will be a little out of my element, at least that is what Sergio and Scott will think...Ha ..Ha..Ha... But I always have many tricks up my sleeve .
Remember my first start was doing Jughead pages for Archie. Hmmm This should be very useful to me today.  Like I said, "A, can't miss panel".  A once in a life time panel for me meaning it is my first time.
I will have to kill my daughter Kris when I get back to New York since she is the one that signed me up for this... See you at 11:45 today, wish me luck.

Today Friday at San Diego Comic Con

Today I will be doing an important panel at 1:00 to 2:00 on a project that I and Rafael Medoff and myself and Continuity Productions and Disney Education have been working on called "They Spoke Out". This is probably one of the most important pieces of work that I have worked on in my career.
"They Spoke Out is a series of motion comic videos profiling Americans of all faiths who spoke out against the Nazi genocide for a Disney DVD that debuts at San Diego Comic-Con.  Room 4

"We’re not throwing the Holocaust at you," says Adams. "We’re offering a way to help American kids experience the Holocaust through these videos, so they can make their own decisions as to how deeply they want to go into further study."
Created by Disney Educational Productions and the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies in Washington, D.C., it features six 10-minute motion comic episodes illustrated and mostly narrated by Adams--best known for his dynamic style and work on Batman and X-Men--and written by Medoff, the Wyman Institute director and author of 14 books. The episodes blend traditional animation and comic book-style illustrations with newsreel footage, photographs, and historical documents.

The first episodes about Only five feet tall, Fiorello LaGuardia is considered to be one of the greatest mayors of New York City. Beyond that, he was an American who spoke out against Nazi oppression and hatred. Even when his sister, was incarcerated by the Nazis, he would not back down. He knew what was right…and what was wrong.

Mayor LaGuardia is only one of many people that spoke out against Nazi racism and oppression.

A former First Lady who offered to personally care for German Jewish children ... A young journalist who teamed up with an ex-wrestler and a Unitarian minister to smuggle Jewish refugees to safety ... A Treasury Department staffer who risked his career to blow the whistle on those who were obstructing the rescue of Jewish refugees. These and other amazing stories shed new light on one of the most troubling chapters in world history.

Written and researched by Rafael Medoff and drawn by Neal Adams, narrated by Neal Adams and Stan Lee this series adds a detailed look into the people who personally decided they would not allow this horror to go unnoticed. These men and women are heroes in the truest sense of the word.

What am I bringing to Golden Apple?I’ve gotten some notes as to what I’m bringing to Golden Apple. I’m bringing a selection of books: The Art of Neal Adams, Batman Odyssey, The First X-Men, Batman Illustrated, and others. I’m also bringing a selection of $20 prints of vintage covers and barbarian pencil drawings, and hopefully something that everyone will like to have. I’m bringing some commission type drawings, but, and this is important, if you have commission pre-orders you want to get done, and you’re not going to San Diego, let Spyda know what they are right away, so that I can have them for you at the store. Some of the higher priced copies of books will have drawings on the end flaps if you’re interested in that sort of thing. Once again, we’ll see you at Golden Apple on Monday. Think ahead and meet us there. Best, Neal Adams

Werewolves of London

 London is calling.
Where do you go for the Fourth of July, Independence Day?
England , of course! .........At the airport, they asked me if I had something to declare?
"Independence,"..  I declared ...."from England!!"  They actually thought it was funny!
"What is your reason for coming to England?" They asked, politely.
"I'm a GUEST at the "London Film and Comic Con" I responded.
"IN-CREDIBLE!  I'll see you there!" His eyes lit up!
London, will I see you all there , as well,...in spite of that little Revolution thingie-wingie?
I'm bringing  sketches and drawings, and copies of  the "Walking Dead" Con Special Comic.
How's that?? See you tomorrow.
Best

ew Yorkers, the Wizard World New York Experience Convention...INCREDIBLE!

The "Walking Dead" reprint give-away...instant collector's item. Look them up on EBay this morning. You will be shocked at how valuable they are.

ESPECIALLY, especially, the VIP...Sketch Black and White cover...is selling on EBay at...go look it up yourself. You will be shocked.

Today is the last day of this con, at Basketball City, Pier 36 at 299 South St., FDR Drive and Montgomery St. on the Lower East Side. You couldn't miss it with a baseball. This has become an overnight phenomenon. There will be people in the lobby trying to buy your VIP copies of this free comic book, right after you buy your ticket. I've never seen anything like it in my life. New Yorkers, they'll be talking about this for years.

The color cover, you get free for the regular ticket, and you can turn it over on EBay if you want to. But that VIP cover, well all I can say is, look it up on EBay. If you're in the New York Tri-State area, tell your friends. It's a stunner.

Hellooooo Phoenix!

A lot of you guys who wanted to order stuff didn’t get to our booth because there were so many people, because there was so much crazy cosplay, and because the non-fire drove us out of the building. So, if you were one of those people who missed us, you can order your golden ticket bag here from the studio, or anything else you might want to get. For those of you who did order, and I got it to you at the convention, you had very big smiles on your faces, and that makes me very happy. For the 10 or so that I have to send drawings to, I’ll get them to you within a week or two. Meanwhile we’re on to Denver.

And for you folks in Denver, there’s not much time to pre-order anymore, but you might want to communicate with Jason at our site and he can set the drawings up. See you in Denver.

One last thing, we are coming to the Vegas show, and we’ll have a very big booth. So if anyone wants to pre-order there, cool. And we’ll also see you in Vegas.

Big Wow and Phoenix

Here we are in San Jose at the Big Wow convention. Everybody says it’s a true artist and comic book convention. Very little show biz, lots of comics, comics, comics. If you pre-ordered, hopefully I’ll see you tomorrow morning. If you didn’t pre-order yet, next week we’ll be at the Phoenix Comicon. If you can’t make it to Phoenix, order your piece with Jason here at Continuity, and he will get it to you. If you happen to be flying between San Jose and Phoenix, I’ll hand it out the window to you.

You know what this is like? It’s like being with the traveling circus, going from one city to the next. I hope we’ll see you soon.

Ottawa Comiccon May 10-12

Wow! A whole 2 weeks between conventions.

At Calgary, we sold 6 pieces of art and a couple of dozen commissions. Boy was I busy! I still have a couple I have to send to folks. If you want to have your commission brought to you at Ottawa Comiccon, it would be really smart to order beforehand.

We had a great time in Calgary, and there were a lot of happy folks there. We expect to have an even better time in Ottawa. This is an absolutely great convention. It's never been better. You folks in Ottawa, we will be seeing you with bells on.

Stuff I can't talk about, AGAIN.

Interesting pre-convention sketches sit on my desk, just under my sketch for a very special cover that I can talk about soon.I have also just inked the cover for the last chapter of the first half of the "Blood" saga.

Blood has confronted the first of his true enemies, and his response is very nasty indeed. Is Blood a good guy or a bad guy? Well I can tell you two things about it. First he's dead, and second, as a result he's gotten even nastier than ever before.

I wish I could tell you more about exactly what I'm doing. I'm working on a short story for DC Comics, and I've been forbidden to talk about it, and I'm very anxious to talk about it. Oh well, it'll be soon enough.

How 'bout this. One of the pre-convention sketches requested by a very adventurous fan, has the predator, battling an otherwise famous "Jungle Man". Okay I'm being too obvious.

Is this enough for today?

Carmine

When I went to the School of Industrial Art, the only vocational art high school in the world, as far as I know, Sol Harrison, Head of Production at DC Comics, came to visit our school. He spoke of how bad the comic book industry was, and that it was a failing industry, even though many alumni from SIA, continued to due work there.

I'm sure his talk was devastating to some, but all I saw was the original art pages that Sol had brought with him, that lined the auditorium. At the end of his talk that I really never heard a word of, because he was, well...boring, and probably since he didn't want to carry them back to DC Comics, he offered to leave the pages behind, to be divided between the cartooning students.

You may have seen a pack of hyenas on the Discovery Channel pursue and devour their prey! This was us, of course. Within 30 seconds we had devoured our spoils, and now the business of trading-up with each other, to improve our position and secure our personal favorites, began. I got more pages than anyone else, because I leap-frogged the desks to get to the pile. But others had snagged prizes as the teacher tried to deal with it fairly. I had two Wayne Boring Supermans, but somebody had a Joe Kubert page. Wouldn't he rather have two Wayne Boring Superman's? Yes, the sucker would. I got an Eli Katz, but I didn't recognize the name on the back, Eli Katz. I kept it anyway. Turned-out to be Gil Kane. Then I got a Dan Barry. It wasn't an exciting page, but boy, was it well-drawn. I had two Ross Andrews and a Flash. But somebody had a Pow-Wow Smith penciled and inked by Carmine Infantino. What to do, what to do?

Would this sucker take a Flash penciled by Carmine, and inked by Joe Giella, and a Ross Andrew? He did. I went off chortling to myself. Now you might think Carmine inked by other, even good inkers like Joe, was the same as Carmine inked by Carmine, it wasn't, and of course I love Joe Giella's work, and the guy. The work inked by Carmine almost wasn't comic book work. It had this scritchy, sketchy line. Almost like Carmine was still sketching while he was inking. Pow-Wow Smith's eyeball didn't look like an eyeball at all, it looked like a sketchy, glowing sun was the cornea, and it was trying to tell me it was something else.

Anyway, time went by, I didn't get to work for DC Comics. Nobody did. I worked for everyone else in the world. I did work for Archie Comics, Advertising Illustration, comics for advertising, and even a Syndicated Comic Strip.

Regular comic books were indeed, apparently, a terrible business to be in, as Sol Harrison had said. But things were beginning to change. Jack Kirby had arrived at Timely Comics and he and Stan were scaring the b'jesus out of DC Comics. I found myself temporarily in need of work. Even the Eu-ych Comic Books (any port in a storm).

I got to see Bob Kaniger at DC, the war comics editor, and began my real career down the road of self-destruction, into comic books. First visit, I walked by a room with two editing desks and a drawing table. I asked about the guy at the drawing table, the only artist, who worked daily at DC Comics on the premises. It was Carmine Infantino. A couple of weeks later, I forced myself to introduce myself to him, and this is what I used as the excuse of that introduction. I brought in that Pow-Wow Smith original to hand to him. He was gracious, mildly interested, (apparently artists just handed in pages and watched them disappear into the draws and even cut-up and destroyed, I later found). But keeping them was not a priority. Getting paid $50. a page, was. And so I loosed my treasure into Carmine's hand. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me, while I kept it, and then when I gave it back to Carmine. I honestly don't have the words for it.

I was able to give Joe Kubert back the two pages I had of his. He thanked me too. But I could see in all of this, that the world that Joe Kubert lived in, and the world that the brilliant, individualistic, stylistic, Carmine Infantino lived in, was going to have to change. They didn't realize their own greatness, only I did. Just to have those pages, for the six or seven years that I had them, inspired me, more than you can imagine.

I know everybody else has a different view of Carmine Infantino, and that you folks can't really share this view of mine. I can only tell you that it was profound and significant, and I wish I could share the real feeling of that time with you.

I wish Carmine had put out all those cigars so he could still be with us.

And DC Comics, when in God's name, are you going to reprint all of Carmine's work for us, you knuckleheads?

You can go to our site at www.nealadams.com and go to the Store and see the different types of original art we have and order up what you might want today Thursday the 11th and we will have it ready for you at the show. Kansas City here we come!

Okay, last pre-order, Batman done, for the Planet Comicon Convention in Kansas City.

If you want a commission, you'll have to wait until I get there, Buckeroos. You can still buy drawing and other stuff here on the site, and Jason will get it to you. But commissions will have to wait until Saturday, unless you can sneak-in during set-up.

In fact at Wondercon, some dealers came over during set-up and made, guess what, deals. Of course, dealers don't get to travel the convention floor very easily once the convention has started. And just outside of Wondercon, and up the block, was Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, along with Knott's Berry Farm.

Is barbeque really great in Kansas City? That's what I hear. See you there!

Can't find us?

Well we're going to ust under that big old sign. You can't miss it!

Im back from St Louis and On my way to Wonder Con

Hi,
Poor Jason has to stay up to date with the Golden Ticket package. I guess saving $50.00 is to hard for people to resist. Sorry, Jase. Love ya.
St Louis was great, as I expected it to be and Wizard is really relating well to comic book fans. They
are also treating my family like royalty. It's nice being Neal.
Now lets talk about Wonder Con, I will be drawing and wanting for good conversation so please come down and see all the new prints and books that we have at our table.
Tell your friends the circus is coming to town.

Best Regards
Neal Adams

Golden tickets for Mega Con in Orlando

Next weekend, not this, but  March 15, 16, 17 is the  Orlando Mega Con .   However, anytime before the con,  you can pre-order the Golden ticket bag of goodies for $200.  includes Batman illustrated #1 with a tipped in original drawing of B'man by yours truly, signed and dedicated (AT THE SHOW) two prints of your choice, A sketchbook of your choice (A savings of $30.) AND you get to go to the Head of the line, where I'll sign your choices.

If you can't get to the show, sure, we'll send it to you. Just order with  Jason.

FYI Pre-ordering  here is becoming the Name-Of-The-Game for commissions as well. As I type, I'm finishing up a Ms Mystic and other D.C. and Marvel characters later tonight.  No rush-no muss-no bother. It's a GREAT system for me, Jason, my son, taking care of all orders in between sculpting chores, ( See his sculpting site,  spydacreations.com ), and you folks,... not having to rush at the last minute,.....and yes, I will be doing sketches, during the convention, never fear.
Best,
Neal

Dirty little secret #1 this month

People come up to me at cons and on the street, and lean in and say "I LOVED Batman Odyssey", as if it's a secret.
"Man, Odyssey blew me away, it had everything, and when Batman blew up Robin, sheeee-ite!"   .....Then some,.. " What was that whole thing on the net?"
So I shrug my shoulders and mumble, "I don't know,.. I told everyone it was going to be chapters in a book, and no attempt to tell short stories.  Something (shudder) new. Yet,..somehow, they wanted to know the End of the story, and they didn't want unanswered questions."
Then, "But you wrapped it up, and I had to go back and read it over again to..." And then ten minutes of conversation,..and then, BLAM "The last chapter,...WOW!"

So, I do the big-eyed, shake my head and smile that 'What can you do, it's the internet', smile,..and happily sign their 'Batman Odyssey'. Happy (and  a little confused) Puppies all around.

Pre-orders

I finished all the pre-orders for England and Emerald City over New Years, and still had time for nd we had our New Years Chocolate Egg Creams.

I also just did covers for the program books for both London Super Con and Orlando's Mega Con.

Jason got some special after holiday sales in, and anybody who wants to pre-order for any of the upcoming conventions, now is the right time to do it.

Thanks and a shout out to everybody who's helped raise money for Peter David and his family. And please go buy his books. That's the best way to help. He's back at work, but obviously, with a stroke, not at 100%. And guess what? Buying his books is a great morale booster. So, really, please do it. You can buy them at this link.

Peter David

This one is really easy. In order to help Peter David, you don't actually have to help Peter David. You can just buy his books. How cool is that? Here's a link to get to where you can order his books. Nothing could be easier. Please go and order his books. Even just one. Everything helps. Thank you so very, very much.
